Doctor's Note
Reimbursement of all health products requires a doctor’s note, which can be issued by your own family doctor or any walk-in clinic doctor.
Read Clients' Insurance Booklet
- To verify insurance benefits, you can:
- Check the client’s paper policy manual or small booklet.
- Have the client log into their personal account with their insurance company to view online benefit information.
- Call the insurance company in front of the client. The contact number is on the back of the client’s insurance card.
The insurance company will first verify the client’s identity and obtain their consent before discussing insurance coverage and amounts with the therapist.
Click to open this form, print it out, and use it to inquire about and record each listed insurance benefit. Save this information in the client’s file and use it to issue receipts based on this record in the future.
Check the Approved list of Insurance Companies
Osteopaths can sign off on a wide range of reimbursable items, not just osteopathic treatments. More commonly, the reimbursement covers health care products (Medical Devices), which can amount to several thousand yuan per person per year, far exceeding the reimbursement for osteopathic treatment alone. If certain insurance companies do not cover osteopathic treatments, they may still reimburse health care products such as:
- Back Support/Brace
- Shoulder Brace
- Knee Brace
- Elbow Brace
- Wrist Brace
- Ankle Brace
- Compression Stockings
- Custom Orthotics
- TENS Machine

Mail Reimbursements for New Insurance Companies
If the insurance company’s database doesn’t list the therapist’s name, you’ll need to mail in a completed reimbursement form. The company will then add the therapist to their database for future online reimbursements.
Traditional mail-in reimbursements are less likely to be audited, while online reimbursements, which don’t require a receipt from the clinic, have a higher risk of fraud.

Is Direct Billing Better?
Recently, many clinics and therapists have started to use direct billing through third party plateform to payments from insurance companies ranther than their clients. However, this approach has drawbacks: clinics may face income tax issues, and clients might exhaust their coverage, leaving the clinic unpaid.
The best approach is to collect payment from clients, issue a receipt, and let them handle reimbursement with their insurance company. Alternatively, clinics can assist by filling out the claim form and mailing it to the client with the receipt.
